Miami will build $13 million indoor sports center

Miami University trustees have given the green light to a new indoor sports center to be built on the northeast side of Yager Stadium.

The 91,000-square-foot facility will be constructed almost fully with donor contributions and will be used by Miami student-athletes. It will also house intramurals, club sports and youth athletic tournaments.

The project, which was announced Friday, is expected to begin in March. Dave Meyer, MU’s assistant athletic director for athletic communications, said there is no target date for completion at this point.

“I want to thank the Board of Trustees and President (David) Hodge for allowing us to move forward on this incredible project,” athletic director David Sayler said. “When we bring recruits to campus, we want our facilities to reflect our commitment to the student-athlete experience and our vision for where Miami athletics is going.

“This, combined with the recent addition of (football) coach Chuck Martin, continues the positive momentum for Miami athletics.”

The $13 million facility will feature a 120-yard football field that will be used for all of Miami’s 19 varsity sports. FieldTurf will be the playing surface.

Other features include netting for baseball, softball and golf, along with four 100-yard sprint lanes, a high jump area, a long jump pit, storage space and an observation deck.
