College Insider: West’s Wagner among MSJ baseball standouts

Six local players contributed to Mount St. Joseph University’s first winning baseball season since 2011.

Freshman pitcher Alex Wagner, a Lakota West High School graduate, earned a spot on the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference first team by going 5-1 with a 2.22 earned run average.

Eight of his 12 appearances were starts for the Lions (21-19), and he had 32 strikeouts in 52.2 innings.

Junior utility man/pitcher Zak Farmer (Lakota West) made the HCAC second team. He had a .339 batting average and a triple while leading the team in hits (57), runs (37), doubles (16), home runs (six) and RBIs (37).

On the mound, Farmer was 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA in seven appearances. He struck out 10 in 6.2 innings.

Junior outfielder Nick Browning (Badin) paced MSJ in steals (eight). He hit .291 with 10 doubles, a triple, two homers, 21 RBIs and 29 runs.

Junior pitcher Jacob Gunnell (Fairfield) threw 32 innings and had 41 strikeouts for the Mount. He was 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA, appearing in relief 13 times and making one start.

Freshman pitcher Nick Gunnell (Fairfield) made 12 appearances and one start. He was 0-0 with a 2.33 ERA, collecting 10 strikeouts in 19.1 innings.

Junior pitcher Malik Zuberi (Lakota West) went 2-3 with an 8.16 ERA in 14 relief outings. He totaled 12 strikeouts in 14.1 innings.

• Senior outfielder Steven Moore (Hamilton) helped Ohio Wesleyan post a 27-16 record and advance to the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional.

Moore made 35 starts for the Battling Bishops, hitting .344 with eight doubles, one triple, one homer, 22 RBIs, 19 runs and eight stolen bases.

Softball: Ohio Northern senior catcher/infielder Amanda Lahti (Lakota West) garnered a spot on the NFCA All-Central Region second team.

Lahti paced the Polar Bears (24-19) in RBIs (43) and triples (tw0) while hitting .348 with 11 doubles, two homers and 23 runs.

She was an honorable mention selection in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Lahti was also named to the OAC’s academic and all-tournament teams.
