College Insider: Lakota East’s Lewis is an All-American at Northwestern

Rachel Lewis is the 11th All-American in Northwestern University softball history.

The freshman second baseman and Lakota East High School graduate was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association second team and also earned a spot on the Big Ten Conference first team.

Lewis started every game and hit .351 with 24 stolen bases for the Wildcats, leading the team in doubles (16), home runs (17), RBIs (64), runs (59) and slugging percentage (.754). She ranked among the NCAA Division I leaders in the latter four categories.

The Wildcats went 38-19. They finished tied for fourth during the Big Ten’s regular season, then advanced to the Big Ten tournament title game.

Northwestern garnered an NCAA tournament berth and had a 2-2 record at the Athens Regional, defeating California twice and losing to No. 7 Georgia twice.

• Sinclair Community College freshman Alexis Strother (Lebanon) has been named Pitcher of the Year and Player of the Year in the Ohio Community College Athletic Association.

Strother hit .485 with six doubles, six home runs, 37 RBIs and a .727 slugging percentage before the Tartan Pride advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II district tournament, where they went 1-2.

She was 14-4 with a 1.88 earned run average and 149 strikeouts in 111.2 innings before district play.

Sinclair finished 26-13.

• Northwestern Ohio sophomore outfielder Joey Brinegar (Madison) was selected as a first-team player in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and also earned an All-Academic award from the conference.

Brinegar started every game and hit .333 for the Racers (31-14), leading the squad in home runs (seven) and RBIs (39). She added nine doubles, a triple and 20 runs.

UNOH finished fourth in the WHAC regular season, won the conference tournament and went 1-2 in the NAIA tournament.

Baseball: Mount St. Joseph junior pitcher Alex Wagner (Lakota West) has been named to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference second team.

Wagner was the Lions’ ace, posting a 6-4 record with a 2.39 earned run average in 11 starts. He totaled 54 strikeouts in 71.2 innings.

Sophomore Garrett Hogan (Badin) was a dual threat as an infielder/pitcher for MSJ. Hogan had a .312 batting average with eight doubles, a triple, a home run and 17 RBIs. He tied for the team lead in doubles.

On the mound, Hogan was 1-2 with three saves and a 2.45 ERA in 11 appearances.

Also for MSJ, sophomore utility player Roman Rothwell (Monroe) hit .255 with two doubles, four home runs, 16 RBIs, 19 runs and three stolen bases; junior pitcher Nick Gunnell (Fairfield) had a 3.86 ERA in two mound appearances; and freshman outfielder Michael Carroll (Ross) hit .225 with a double and three RBIs in 18 games.

The Lions finished 14-21.
