College Insider: Lakota East’s Steigerwald strong in protecting Murray goal

Alex Steigerwald is leading the Ohio Valley Conference in save percentage as a senior goalkeeper for the Murray State University women’s soccer team.

The Lakota East High School graduate has totaled 53 saves and allowed 12 goals for an .815 percentage for the Racers, who are 8-2-1 overall and 4-1 in the OVC.

Steigerwald is Murray’s all-time wins leader in goal with 41 and counting.

The Racers, based in Murray, Ky., will travel to Tennessee Martin on Friday at 7 p.m.

• Senior Abby Daley (Springboro) of Franklin and junior Lizzie Matchett (Lakota West) have started every game as defenders for Hanover (Ind.), which is 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Matchett has a pair of assists for the Panthers, who will visit Franklin (Ind.) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Football: Kentucky senior tackle George Asafo-Adjei (Lakota West) was named Southeastern Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week on Monday.

Asafo-Adjei helped the 13th-ranked Wildcats collect 195 yards and three touchdowns on the ground in last Saturday’s 24-10 victory over visiting South Carolina. He graded at 90 percent for the game with two knockdown blocks and 19 blocks at the point of attack while not missing an assignment or allowing a sack or pressure.

UK will be looking to go 6-0 for the first time since 1950 on Saturday when they travel to Texas A&M at 7 p.m.

Volleyball: Senior setter Alexis Thomas (Fairfield) leads Lake Erie in assists (531) and is tied for the team lead in service aces (20).

Thomas also has 186 digs, 33 kills and nine total blocks for the Storm, who are 12-5 overall and 7-3 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

Lake Erie will host Cedarville on Friday at 7 p.m.

• Senior middle blocker/outside hitter Cailey Plemmons (Talawanda) ranks second at Mount St. Joseph in kills (162) and digs (158). She also has eight total blocks.

The Lions, 6-10 overall and 0-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, are at Bluffton on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
