College football: Fairfield’s Josiah Scott earns national honor

Josiah Scott’s freshman season is being noticed as one of the best in college football in 2017.

The Fairfield High School graduate was named to ESPN’s Freshman All-America first team this week after he became a day-one starter at Michigan State.

The Spartans have become known for strong cornerback play under head coach Mark Dantonio, but Scott accomplished something none before him (including first-round NFL draft pick Darqueze Dennard of the Bengals) did by being picked for a freshman All-America team.

Scott had 30 tackles and two interceptions while starting 11 games for the Spartans.

He was also named to the Big Ten Network All-Freshman Team and made the media’s All-Big Ten third team.
