Area golfer one shot off pace at LPGA tourney in Australia

Lakota West graduate Marissa Steen is one shot off the lead in the LPGA’s ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open.

Steen followed up an opening-round 67 with a 2-under-par 71 in the second round Friday at the Royal Adelaide Golf Club in Adelaide, South Australia.

Steen, 27, is at one of four players at 8 under, one shot back of 36-hole leader Sarah Jane Smith.

Steen finished tied for 42nd in the season-opening LPGA event in the Bahamas last month.

This is Steen's second go-round on the LPGA Tour. After winning three times and earning Player of the Year honors on the Symetra Tour in 2014, Steen earned LPGA Tour membership for 2015. She struggled during that rookie season because of cracked ribs and made only four cuts. The University of Memphis grad went back to the Symetra Tour last year and finished eight on the money list to regain LPGA Tour status.

Steen, a 2008 West grad, helped the Firebirds to a Division I state title in 2006. She’s still coached by Tim Lambert, who coached the Firebirds and now coaches the Mason High School boys team.

The third round will be broadcast today/early Saturday from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Golf Channel.
