Here’s a reason to smile and say “cheese.” There’s a whole day dedicated to taking selfies in museums.

Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019 is Museum Selfie Day, an opportunity to turn the camera on yourself and then share your visit to one of our area museums.

The Dayton Art Institute is one local museum that is really getting into the game, requesting its visitors to “show the world how much Dayton loves its art museum!”

Tag a photo with #MuseumSelfie and #DAIselfie as museums around the world celebrate this annual “hashtag holiday.”

The day was started by museum enthusiast Mar Dixon in 2015 to “showcase the people in museums and the memories attached to it,” according to the website, Days of the Year. Museums around the world now take part on Twitter and Instagram.

The event is intended to be lighthearted. Strike a pose or make a funny face, but no matter what museum you are taking your selfie in, it’s a good idea to keep in mind the instructions from the Art Institute.

“Have fun and be creative, but please remember to be mindful/respectful of other museum guests, keep an appropriate distance from the art, and no selfie sticks or tripods in the galleries!”
