“There’s a ton of flexibility, you get to make you own schedule, and you’re completely in control,” Doyle said. “You pretty much get what you’ve put into it. You can work as hard as you want to work and you’ll make as much as you want to make.”
Many people entering the field, however, have the misconception that there is only one career path in cosmetology, behind the chair, when there as “so many different opportunities” besides that, Doyle said.
Cosmetology school requires 1,500 hours of training in Ohio and no other post-high school degree, she said. Those attempting to complete those hours on a full-time basis typically complete the program in about 11 months, while part-timers usually finish in about 18 months.
“You can start your life when you want to,” Doyle said.
Those wanting to explore a career in the beauty industry, may do so during Paul Mitchell The School’s open house event from 6 to 8 p.m. March 28 at 11956 Lebanon Road in Sharonville.
The event, held at all 116 Paul Mitchell schools nationwide at the same time, aims to show visitors how to turn their creativity into a career by becoming a hairstylist, barber, esthetician or makeup artist
Visitors to the event will receive a tour of the school, meet some of the students and staff members, and participate in an actual classroom experience.
School director Jessica Riscili said the event will allow visitors to discover the school’s career-focused education, unique culture, scholarships and financial options.
The timing of the event works well for high school juniors preparing to visit colleges and explore their career possibilities, according to Winn Claybaugh, dean and co-founder for Paul Mitchell Schools.
“From the creative side to the business side and everything in between, this industry can take you anywhere you want to go,” Claybaugh said. “It’s also a great choice for past graduates who might be ready for a change or a second career.”
