Police: Man charged with assault for punching the manager of an Oxford bar

Police were called to Brick Street bar about a fight in the rear alley at 12:07 a.m. March 4 and arrived to find multiple males on the ground, one of whom was a manager at the bar.

Several staff employees were holding down a man in a red/maroon shirt, who was identified as the one who had punched the manager several times in the face, while he was being escorted from the bar.

He was identified as Andrew P. Spears, 23, and taken to a patrol car, while other officers collected witness statements.

The bar manager said he was escorting the intoxicated male from the bar when began yelling he needed his credit card back and was told he could get it the next day. Spears allegedly began pushing and then punched the manager in the face.

Several witnesses made statements supported that description of events.

Speaking to the officer he reportedly admitted. “Yes. I might have punched someone but I don’t think I was the first to swing.” At the police station he made several statements in reference to his level of intoxication and that he knew he was drunk. The officer noted a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person and slurred speech.

He was charged with assault and disorderly conduct and released to his friends on his own recognizance.
