Police: Florida woman's neglect caused baby to have seizures

A Florida woman is accused of neglecting a baby in her care, leading to the child having seizures and head trauma, TCPalm reported.

Shelby Shortnacy, 24, of Fort Pierce, was arrested Sunday and charged with one felony count of child neglect, according to the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office.

On March 15, Port St. Lucie police were called by the Florida Department of Children and Family about an ongoing investigation involving Shortnacy, TCPalm reported. According to the DCF, a baby in Shortnacy's care was taken to a Fort Pierce hospital with seizures and head trauma consistent with child abuse. the website reported.

According to police, Shortnacy said that on March 10, the baby was sitting with her on a bed and the child fell onto the floor, TCPalm reported. Police said she admitted to smoking marijuana several hours before caring for the baby, the website reported.

Medical personnel at the hospital said the baby's injuries were not consistent with a fall from a bed, but from a "shaken baby syndrome," TCPalm reported.

Shortnacy was arrested and remains in custody iat the St. Lucie County Jail n lieu of a $100,000, the website reported.
