She was 19 then, now she is 69 years old and this was the 22nd try for her to get out of prison and is being held at the California Institute for Women in Corona, California, Reuters reported.
Van Houten was recommended for parole two times previously, but it was denied by then-Gov. Jerry Brown, the AP reported.
Now it is up to Gov. Gavin Newsom to decide Van Houten's fate after the decision goes through a 150-day review process, Reuters reported.
Manson influenced his followers, mostly young women, to kill seven people, including actress Sharon Tate, in August 1969. Prosecutors said at the time he wanted to start a race war, according to Reuters.
VanHouten was part of the group of followers who stabbed and killed Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary, the day after Tate and four others were killed, the AP reported.
Manson died in 2017 while serving life in prison. He was 83, Reuters reported.
