Dayton, Ohio shooting: How to help the victims

The nation is searching for ways to help in the aftermath of the shooting in Dayton, Ohio's Oregon District Sunday morning. Ways to assist are below. This story will be updated as new opportunities emerge.

Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund at The Dayton Foundation

Mayor Nan Whaley announced that The Dayton Foundation has set uo a tax-deductible fund that is accepting donations for relief to the victims and their family and friends in the shooting.

According to the Dayton Foundation website, the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund will help those impacted by the shooting. The organization will also mail a letter acknowledging the contribution.

Those interested in contributing can donate their own dollar amount at The Dayton Foundation website.

Community Blood Center 

Local hospitals had sufficient blood supplies to respond to the shooting in the Oregon District on Sunday, but the Community Blood Center will be open Monday to accept donations to replenish the supply.

“We definitely know people will want to donate to support the community,” Mark Pompilio, spokesman for Community Blood Center said.

The Community Blood Center, located at 349 S. Main St., is open Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Pompilio said donors can make an appointment and can also find area blood drives at www.donortime.com.

Warped Wing Brewing Company

Warped Wing, located at 26 Wyandot St., announced on the brewery's Facebook page that it will open today and all sales in the taproom will go toward "helping victims and their families and our friends in the Oregon District."

“We’ve discussed at length and have made the difficult decision to open today because we won’t let fear and hate rule our community. We also want to be a place where the community can come be together.”

Yellow Cab Food Truck Rally

The Yellow Cab Food Truck Rally will continue today at 700 E. Fourth St. until 2 p.m.

The organizers posted on their Facebook page: "Our space is a safe space and we invite the community to be together as one in any way you need to be. We will be accepting donations for the victims and their families."

Lily’s Bistro

The Oregon District restaurant was unable to open for its regular Sunday brunch because the streets were blocked off, but Lily's owners announced on the restaurant's Facebook page that Lily's will offer a potluck dinner starting at 3 p.m. "It's pay what you like, all proceeds to help with the server at (Blind Bob's Bar) who is in surgery from last night's shooting. Bring what you want, but just friendship is all we ask. We'll have friend chicken and sides. Please don't go into a dark place with this, we are strong and need to be with each other."
