Senator asks feds to reimburse Dayton for KKK rally

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown this week is asking for the U.S. Department of Justice to help identify funding that could be used to repay Dayton for costs associated with May 25th rally of a KKK-affiliated group.

The city of Dayton spent more than $650,000 on security measures and police protection for the rally, which was held at Courthouse Square in downtown Dayton.

City officials and elected leaders said the city’s security plan was a success since there were no arrests, injuries, violence, deaths or use of force by police.

Brown has sent a letter to the DOJ asking for the department’s assistance to help find funding to offset the city’s costs of maintaining law and order.

“Implementing a security plan for this event required the city to pay overtime to its personnel and bring in law enforcement personnel from other cities,” Brown said. “These unexpected costs required the city to reallocate funds, which impacts the city’s capacity to provide essential other services.”
