Sidney man ID’d as drowning victim pulled from Great Miami River

A 47-year-old Sidney man was identified this afternoon as the person whose body was recovered Saturday evening from the Great Miami River.

Steve N. Helton’s cause of death is likely due to drowning, according to a preliminary report from the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office, Sidney police announced today.

There were no signs of injury on Helton’s body, police said.

“The investigation is still ongoing as to the circumstance of how and why Mr. Helton came to be in the river that led to his drowning,” Sidney police Capt. Jerry Tangeman stated in a release.

A man was fishing this evening when he spotted a body that was halfway submerged in the Great Miami River, Sidney police said.

The fatality was an adult male, whose body was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. His name has not been released.

FIRST REPORT

A body was pulled this evening from the Great Miami River.

The recovery was made sometime around 7:15 p.m., and the Shelby County coroner was called.

Crews were in the area of the 200 block of Brooklyn Avenue, behind the Agape food distribution facility.
