HAMILTON — As a way to patronize local businesses while blowing off steam, German Village is hosting its twice-annual pub crawl this week.

The open event began in 2008 by Gary Richards, business district manager at ReDiscover Hamilton, and occurs every May and September.

This crawl’s theme is Little Chicago and runs from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25. The event’s five stops will be offering free appetizers and discounted drinks.

The event started as a way to bring people to Hamilton on a Saturday night who might not normally come, Richards said.

“It’s been growing each year,” Richards said. “It adds interest and excitement to areas of the city.”

Debby Ripperger, event committee member, said Hamilton used to be called Little Chicago and John Dillinger and members of the Purple Gang have come through in the past.

Free limo rides will be given to go along with the gangster theme.

Peggy Music, event committee member, said Easy’s in the Village and Riverbank Cafe will play jazz music from the 1920s.

“We’re hoping to get people participating in dressing up,” Music said. “We had a few dress up last time (for the 1980s theme), but the 1920s is more popular for people that like to dress up.”

Money raised from the $5 wristbands goes toward the German Village Christmas Walk the first Sunday in December.

Barb Musch, event committee member, said a new restaurant on the corner of Third and Village streets is slated to be part of next May’s pub crawl.

“This will be the last year for Freddie’s because it’s been sold,” said Musch, who said she will be donning a red flapper dress at the event.
