UPDATE @ 6:14 p.m.:
The brakes apparently failed on the Rumpke trash truck in the three-vehicle accident on Stanley Avenue at the state Route 4 off ramp that sent two people to a hospital, Dayton police Lt. Randy Beane said.
Two people in a work van hit by the Rumpke truck suffered non-life threatening injuries, the lieutenant said. They were taken to Miami Valley Hospital.
The Rumpke truck was coming off the ramp from Route 4 North when its brakes apparently failed and it slammed into the rear of the work van, which had stopped at the intersection. That collision pushed the work van across Stanley Avenue and into the path of a minivan, Lt. Beane said.
Four people in the minivan-work van collision were not injured, he said, and neither was the Rumpke driver.
Because the accident involved a commercial vehicle, the Ohio State Highway Patrol was checking the Rumpke truck’s brakes on scene to see if they were functional, Beane said.
