Hamilton native known as history buff, businessman

SOMERVILLE — Donald L. Dunkelberger, a Somerville resident who a history buff who enjoyed 18th century re-enactment, died Monday. He was 67.

Dunkelberger, a native of Hamilton, was the owner of Dunkelberger Lawn and Garden in Somerville.

He also was a Somerville firefighter for 30 years and fire chief for 10 years.

Dunkelberger also was on the board of directors of Somerville National Bank.

His wife, Susanne, said her husband loved history and especially 18th century re-enacting where he conducted a lot of education programs and volunteered at different historic sites in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee for about 25 years.

They also conducted education programs at different schools such as Talawanda Middle School and Camden and Eaton elementaries.

She said she would demonstrate hearth cooking and he would talk about guns and the 18th century outfits.

She said they also built an 18th century tavern room onto their house. It was featured in Ohio Magazine last January.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ogle & Paul R. Young Funeral Home, 5086 College Corner Pike, Oxford. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, preceded by one hour of visitation at Somerville Presbyterian Church.

Burial is at Somerville Cemetery.

Remembrances may be made in his name to the Somerville Volunteer Fire Department, the Milford Twp. Fire Department, the Oxford Relay for Life or the Seven Mile Life Squad.
