Dog that attacked other dog shot and killed by deputies at apartment fire scene

Deputies shot and killed a dog that attacked another dog at the scene of an apartment fire in Franklin Twp. Thursday afternoon, according to firefighters.

Firefighters responding to a reported apartment fire reported light smoke coming from a unit in the 8700 block of Dayton-Oxford Road around noon.

When firefighters opened the door to the apartment where the fire started, a large dog ran out of the unit past firefighters, knocked over a child, and began attacking another, much smaller dog, investigators said.

A deputies shot and killed the dog to stop the attack, investigators said.

The source of the fire was electrical and was contained to only one unit, firefighters said. All occupants of the apartment complex will be allowed to return inside, except the occupants of the unit where the fire broke out. Those occupants will be displaced, according to firefighters.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.

No human injuries were reported.
