Dayton Christian student killed in crash only had learner’s permit for ‘weeks’

Student gathered there for a morning prayer to remember Jansen, a junior who was also active at Springboro Baptist Church.

“We really try at school to form sort of a family feel, and so we’re going to try and deal with it together as a family,” said Dayton Christian Superintendent David Rough. “I do have a little hole in my heart this morning trying to deal with it personally.”

Jansen has two younger siblings who attend the district.

Her inexperience behind the wheel likely caused the crash at Ohio 48 and Bunnell Hill Road in Clearcreek Twp. that also critically injured her mother.

Police said Jansen brought the SUV to a stop at the sign on Bunnell Hill before turning into the path of the wrecker.

“We don’t know what was going through her mind, but she could have thought she had time or she may not have seen it. It’s my belief she probably didn’t see it,” said Sgt. Curtis Hensley of the Clearcreek Twp. Police Department.

A witness said it appeared the teen saw the truck at the last moment and tried to “gun it” to clear the intersection, but the truck had swerved to avoid her as well, and the vehicles collided.

Springboro Baptist Pastor Connie Hancock remembered Jansen as, “a fun-loving, insightful and wise beyond her years young lady.”

Jansen’s mother Emily Conely, who was a passenger in the SUV, remained in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital on Thursday evening.

Police said there were seven crashes at the intersection of Ohio 48 and Bunnell Hill last year — the fourth most of any intersection in the township.

Other intersections with more frequent crashes were: 741 and 122, Red Lyle Five Points and Lower Springboro, and Ohio 48 and 73, according to police.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the tow truck involved in the crash passed inspection and the driver was not at fault.
