Blame strong winds for hundreds of outages for DP&L customers

UPDATE @ 1:15 a.m.: Repairs are progressing with a broken power pole on Massie Drive in Xenia as the outages there have dropped from 10 to two, DP&L spokesman Rob Beeler said.

The outage total at 1:15 p.m. is approximately 23 customers, according to the online outage page.

Blame the hundreds of outages reported to Dayton Power & Light on Tuesday night on strong winds that have the entire Miami Valley under a wind advisory until Wednesday morning.

"We're chasing a few outages," DP&L spokesman Rob Beeler said. "We're seen a lot of wind coming through. It's a continuation of the weather we've had the last few weeks."

At 9:30 p.m., he said, there were 19 outages affecting 435 customers and DP&L crews were working the following reports:

  • A downed pole in the 2300 block of Lower Bellbrook Road, in Spring Valley, Greene County
  • A pole reportedly leaning in Xenia that prompted police to close Massie Drive at Kylemore Drive as well as Raybell Drive to West Second Street.
  • An issue with a pole in Miami County
  • An issue near Austin Landing (a crew has been dispatched to confirm whether it is an outage involving a pole)
  • An issue in Miamisburg (a crew has been dispatched for an assessment)

A check of DP&L's online outage page at 9:30 p.m. shows 302 outages in Montgomery, 90 in Miami, 37 in Darke and 4 in Greene. Ohio Edison is reporting 17 in Clark County.

Wind gusts as high as 48 mph have been reported at various times Tuesday night a mile south of downtown Dayton, at Dayton International Airport, Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport and Auglaize County Neil Armstrong Airport in New Knoxville.

"They [outages] are scattered and we expect the wind to continue through the night, so the numbers [of outages] could continue," he said.

Beeler is asking people to be careful through the night. He's also asking people to report outages with as much detail as possible.

DP&L has extra people at its dispatch center to deal with outage reports, he said.

You can report an outage online or call 937-877-4outage.

We will update this developing report as we learn more.
