Hamilton Police Department Captain Trent Chenoweth was in exclusive company recently as he was one of 28 graduates of the Certified Law Enforcement Executive program at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy.

Chenoweth completed on Feb. 8 the CLEE program, which was co-sponsored by the Law Enforcement Foundation, Inc. and the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Ohio Department of Public Safety offered additional grant funding.

The 14-month program instructs officers in areas of ethics, change management, interpersonal skills, strategic planning and external environmental management.

“It was incredibly involved to say the least,” Chenoweth said.

Participants were selected for the program by meeting set standards in experience, formal and continuing education, as well as professional-related experience.

The instructors include noted faculty members at universities across the Midwest and consultants to business and industry.

Gordon Graham, a nationally recognized organizational risk manager, assigned the class the task of identifying risks in their respective communities either externally or internally.

The idea was to identify the “what, why and how” of the problem. “It was just like a college course and handing in a college paper,” Chenoweth said. “You had a chance to look at how your operations are running day-to-day.”

One of the issues Chenoweth chose to study involved trains in Hamilton.

“If you look around town we have had issues with trains — multiple train derailments — and we have had issues with railroad crossings,” Chenoweth said.

Sgt. Brian Robinson said the type of training is what the police department finds “constructive and helpful” to building a well-trained police force.

The CLEE program is designed to “elevate the standards of excellence for law enforcement executives,” according to the Ohio Chiefs of Police Association.
