Fitness center won’t host prom for students

A locally owned gym is no longer offering to host prom for Hamilton High School students that didn't meet the attendance requirements to attend the school-organized dance on April 18.

The Hamilton City School District put in place last year a policy that prohibits students with too many unexcused absences — four during the second semester — from attending prom. As a result, 93 students were not able to attend, according to the school district.

TapouT Fitness, a gym that opened at the end of last year in Hamilton on Main Street, had offered to host prom for those ineligible students instead.

“Instead of hosting a prom, TapouT Fitness is offering all Hamilton High School Seniors a complimentary two-month membership, including classes,” one of the owners, Anthony Oglesby, said in an email statement to the Journal-News. “We feel that the discipline of fitness and martial arts will help them during the next phase of their academic or professional career. We want to congratulate the seniors on this major accomplishment and wish them well in the future.”
