Franklin police are looking for a man suspected in the robbery of a gas station Tuesday night in Franklin.

At about 10:46 p.m. Tuesday, a man stole money from an open cash register at Murphy USA, 1265 E. 2nd St., according to the gas station manager.

The manager told police the man then fled on foot from the business. A Warren County police canine unit responded and tracked to a location on Deardoff Road, where it is believed the suspect got into a vehicle and fled.

The suspect is described as a white man, possibly in his early 30s, 5-foot-9, average build, with a brown goatee, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with a Nike emblem.

Police Chief Russell Whitman is hoping that someone might recognize the suspect from a surveillance camera video.

While each store or business sets their own policies, Whitman has a suggestion for a new policy for them.

“Most stores have ‘no shirt, no shoes, no service’ policies but we’d like to see stores to include a ‘no hat, no hoodie, no service’ policy for the safety of their customers and employees,” Whitman said. “But that is up to each store to make that decision.”

He said some businesses, such as banks, already have a notice at the door asking customers to remove their hats, hoods and sunglasses when doing business inside their buildings.

Whitman said this was the second robbery in a week which the suspect wore a hat or a hoodie over their heads. Tuesday’s incident marked the city’s ninth robbery in 2015. Of those robberies, Whitman said five suspects were wearing hoodies while one suspect wore a hat.

Anyone with any information on the robbery or the suspect is asked to contact Franklin police Detective Jeff Stewart at 937-746-2882.
