Florida mom leaves toddler in car at Publix, tells cop ‘nothing happens in (this town)’

A woman in Key Largo told a deputy she had a good reason for leaving her toddler alone in a car at Publix while she went grocery shopping on Sunday night.

Yanese Tejada, 30, left her 1-year-old in the car for more than 30 minutes before a man noticed the child alone and called 911, FL Keys News reports.

A Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to the scene, where Tejada said she went into the grocery store without her child because the toddler fell asleep in the car so she left the air conditioning on.

She then explained to the deputy, “this is Key Largo, nothing happens in Key Largo,” according to Fl Keys News.

The deputy arrested Tejada on a charge of child neglect and she was booked into the county jail. She was released later that night, according to jail records.
