Band-Aids for Bullying is a new character project for the school, consisting of several large wooden hearts, four feet in diameter, that were created by high school students enrolled in the carpentry program. Litman said each heart highlights the district’s five character traits: acceptance, compassion, honesty, personal responsibility and respect.
Litman said the project includes a classroom lesson on the history of the Band-Aid mixed with review of the character trait meanings and “how to heal the heart.”
“The purpose is to really get (students) thinking about what kind of person they want to be and the skills to act on something that’s not quite right. … To take responsibility if you saw something or if you were a bully yourself,” Litman said.
Litman said the hearts are placed in each grade-level pod of the school to serve as a teaching tool and visual reminder of the character traits.
The initiative coincides with the district’s annual “Fill That Bus” food drive. The public schools are collecting personal hygiene items, canned foods and non-perishable food items through Feb. 14.
The community can drop off items to any Hamilton public school or Kroger stores at 1450 S. Erie Blvd. and 1474 Main St.
