U.S. Open Cup: FC Cincinnati-Miami FC match postponed

The U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match between FC Cincinnati and Miami FC was postponed Wednesday night because of inclement weather at the Florida International University’s Riccardo Silva Stadium.

The game never began as storms rolled in about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff. Both teams will conduct a conference call Thursday afternoon with U.S. Soccer to determine a makeup date, likely next week.

FC Cincinnati is scheduled to play a United Soccer League match at Louisville City on Saturday, while Miami FC wraps up its North American Soccer League spring season that night at San Francisco. Miami already has clinched the league’s spring championship and won’t begin the fall season until July 29.

Meanwhile, FCC's slate only grows more congested with the postponement. The second-year USL club doesn't have any midweek games scheduled next week but plays July 22 and then hosts an international friendly with Spanish La Liga's Valencia CF on July 24.

The U.S. Open Cup semifinals aren’t scheduled to take place until Aug. 9.

The winner between Miami and FC Cincinnati will be the first non-Major League Soccer club to advance to the final four since 2011. They are the final two lower division teams remaining in the tournament after USL side Sacramento Republic fell out with a loss to L.A. Galaxy in the Round of 16.

FCC advanced with a win in penalty kicks against MLS leader Chicago Fire SC on June 28, following a fourth-round victory over Columbus Crew SC. Miami, also in its second season, cruised to a 3-1 win over Orlando SC in the fourth round and edged first-year MLS side Atlanta United 3-2 in the Round of 16.

Cincinnati was going to be without defenders Harrison Delbridge, Austin Berry and Justin Hoyte, as well as forward Andrew Wiedeman on Wednesday, according to a press release issued by the team. Delbridge is still considered “day to day” while nursing an abdominal strain suffered July 1 at Orlando City B, and the others reportedly also have “serious injury concerns,” according to the release.
