HHS Athletic Hall of Fame will induct 10 new members

Hicks went to Harvard, became a chief resident at a Boston hospital.

HAMILTON — Ten new members will be inducted into the Hamilton City Schools Athletic Hall of Fame on Feb. 4 at the Courtyard by Marriott Hamilton.

The inductees will be Dewey “Duke” Baker (Taft, class of 1966), Rollie Barton (Hamilton, 1945), Brett Couch (Garfield, 1980), Angela Harris-Martin (Hamilton, 1993), Dr. Pearlman David Hicks (Garfield, 1964), Lewis Hirt (coach), Mark McCormick (Taft, 1973), Seth Morris (Hamilton, 1999), Fred Rodgers (Hamilton, 1995) and Greg Siereveld (Taft, 1968).

The Hall of Fame banquet will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner at 7.

Tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased at the Hamilton High School athletic department, Tom’s Cigar Store on Main Street and Clark’s Sporting Goods in Hamilton.

Following is the second in a series of three reports taking a closer look at the newest inductees.

Dr. Pearlman "Tony" Hicks, Class of 1964: Hicks graduated in 1964 from Garfield, where he was a halfback a team co-captain his senior year. As class valedictorian, he earned a full scholarship to Harvard, where he played football. But after sitting out a year with an inury, Hicks was hired by an ear, nose and throat specialist and became interested in the field of plastic surgery.

After graduating Harvard he earned a full scholarship to Case Western Reserve and later was the first African-American chief resident in plastic surgery at Boston’s Peter Bent Bingham Hospital. He also was the first African-American board certified plastic surgeon in California.

Lewis "Lew" Hirt, coach: Hirt was an outstanding high school and college athlete in Indiana before coming to Hamilton in 1930 as the football and basketball coach. He coached football for four years, and in eight seasons as the Big Blue basketball coach he led his teams to a combined record of 134-42 for a winning percentage of .761. His 1931 team was the first Hamilton squad to reach the state finals.

He also coached at Hamilton Catholic and later took over at Xavier University, leading the school to its first NAIA tournament in 1946.

Hirt is a member of both the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and DePauw’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Angela Harris Martin, Class of 1993: She graduated from Hamilton High in 1993 after playing volleyball, basketball and softball. She lettered for three years on the volleyball team and was first team All-Greater Miami Conference twice. She earned four letters in basketball and was voted All-GMC three times. She was named the Butler County Player of the Year in 1992 and the Cincinnati Enquirer Division Player of the Year in 1992 and '93.

Martin ranks 12th on Hamilton’s all-time scoring list with 651 points.

She graduated from Ohio University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing health informatics.
