City Manager Joshua Smith has directed staff to find a place where they can store bricks reclaimed from the former Champion Paper mill on North B Street, which is being converted into a gigantic indoor sports complex and convention center.

Some Main Street businesses are interested in using the bricks, which are being removed from windows that were covered by bricks decades ago, Smith told them.

“Several businesses along Main Street have asked for some of the reclaimed brick that’s coming off the building, for using them inside their buildings,” Smith said. “We have a couple of new restaurants pending on Main Street. They’ve asked for some of the brick to build wood-fired brick ovens and things of that nature.”

“They’re OK with us taking the brick,” Smith said about the contractors working on the site. “But they just don’t want to store the brick.”

Smith added that he is “incredibly pleased with the pace of progress” at the Spooky Nook site, where lots of earth moving and other activity is happening.
