The region saw three deaths this week when a boat capsized and a man died, a man was found dead in a Hamilton apartment while a shooting suspect was being arrested and a man was crushed by a vehicle when his jack failed, according to police agencies.

On Tuesday, a boat capsized on Acton Lake at Hueston Woods State Park and Jerald Parlett, 65, of Miamisburg, died, according to the Preble County Sheriff’s Office.

Parlett and another man were in the boat when it capsized, sending both into the water, said Sheriff Mike Simpson.

Investigators believe Parlett might have suffered a medical emergency when he went into the water and became unresponsive, Simpson said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Wednesday, at the same time Hamilton police served search warrants against 22-year-old Rickardo Harris, the man suspected of last week’s Pet Valu shooting during a robbery, police found a dead body. Police have said the two incidents are unrelated.

Gregory C. Handley, 66, of 2227 Dixie Highway, Apt. 3, was the man police found to be dead, police said.

Because police believed an effort to arrest Harris could become a dangerous situation, the police SWAT team went to the apartment complex in the 2200 block of Dixie Highway.

Before knocking on the door of the apartment where police believed Harris was, officers knocked on doors of other apartments at the complex to get people out of those dwellings. At one of those apartments, people inside told them there was a man inside who wasn’t moving.

Then on Thursday, a man was killed when a van he was working on fell and came to rest on his head in Ross Twp., police said.

Dennis Ross, 66, was identified as the person killed, Ross Twp. police said.

Crews were dispatched at about 2:45 p.m. Thursday on a report of a person trapped under a vehicle. Police arrived to find the man, who had been changing oil they believe, was under the Honda Odyssey after the jack failed, said Ross Twp. police Chief Darryl Haussler.

Officials transported the man to the nearest fire station and requested Air Care, but he was pronounced dead before the medical helicopter arrived, Haussler said.
