More than 35,000 without power as strong winds hit the Miami Valley

Strong, gusty winds knocked down tree branches and power lines, causing thousands of people to lose power in Southwest Ohio and the Miami Valley Friday afternoon.

As of 3 p.m., more than 35,000 people were without power in the region.

In Montgomery County, AES Ohio had 23,188 customers without service, according to the outage map. Large outages were reported near Cornell Heights and Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark in Dayton, the Rip Rad and Chambersburg roads area in Vandalia and Huber Heights and south of Carriage Hill MetroPark.

The following outages have been reported as of 3 p.m.

• Darke County: 3,353

• Greene County: 998

• Miami County: 1,001

• Montgomery County: 23,188

• Preble County: 861

• Warren County: 468

Ohio Edison

• Champaign County: 54

• Clark County: 2,240

Duke Energy

• Butler County: 225

• Preble County: 10

• Warren County: 244

Strong winds are expected into the evening in the Miami Valley region.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a wind advisory for Butler and Warren counties and a high wind warning for Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Miami, Montgomery and Preble counties until 8 p.m.

Gusts of 50 to 55 mph are possible, with isolated gusts of 60 mph.

The strongest winds are expected near and north of Interstate 70.
