Recruiting roundup: 1 of area’s best headed to MAC, locals stand out at The Opening and more

The list of locals who have verbally committed to Division I college football teams grew by two on the Fourth of July, and a pair of area players represented at The Opening in Oregon.

Since our last recruiting update, two more running backs are off the board.

That includes Raveion Hargrove, who announced Tuesday he plans to play college football at Bowling Green.

The 5-foot-8, 170-pound Trotwood-Madison senior has already rushed for over 4,000 yards in his career, including 3,039 as a sophomore in 2015.

He is the fourth area player to commit to a MAC school for 2018, joining Belmont defensive back Jaden Rucker-Furlow (Miami), Shawnee running back/linebacker Jack McCrory (Ohio) and Sidney defensive tackle Devan Rogers (Toledo)…

Another of the area’s top running backs came off the board late last month when Mason’s Matt Sora verbally committed to Indiana State, an FCS team in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Sora is the second Comet senior to commit, joining tight end Christian Hutchinson (Navy)…

Xavier Peters, a four-star linebacker from Lakota West, also made an Independence Day announcement, but it remains to be seen if his commitment to Kentucky sticks.

The tweet explaining his decision has been deleted, and his most recent message as of this writing read, “I still have to sit down and think about some things.”

Antwuan Johnson, a three-star linebacker who recently transferred to Wayne, told Scout.com he is looking at making a decision in the middle of the season.

That will give him a chance to take officials visits.

The former Michigan commit plans to visit Purdue and Cincinnati (where former Warriors linebacker Marcus Freeman is the defensive coordinator) this summer and also has Louisville, Kentucky and Syracuse in the mix, among others…

Speaking of Wayne, Warriors receiver L’Christian “Blue” Smith was among the select group of 2018 prospects who made the trip to Oregon over the weekend to take part in The Opening.

He got to work out with some of the best players in the country, but is he any closer to announcing where he will play college football?

Here's what Landof10 recruiting guru Jeremy Birmingham had to say:

The week was also important because it meant Smith had a chance to spend a lot of time with other recruits, including the ringleaders of the Buckeyes recruiting class. As Ohio State has turned up the heat on Blue lately, this was the first time key members of the 2018 group, such as Jaelen Gill and Teradja Mitchell, had a chance to get to know him. I know that there is continued talk about Kentucky in this race, but I think Ohio State wins this battle.

Fairfield offensive lineman Jackson Carman, the top-rated player in the state, was also part of the fun out west.

He made headlines (as he often does) by telling Birmingham he isn’t sure if he will go to Ohio State or Clemson on July 21 when both are hosting big recruiting events.

"I'm going to just cross that bridge when I get there," Carman told Land of 10 Saturday night. "I'll just show up some place that day."…

Back home, Springfield is back on the field for summer workouts, looking to make it back to the playoffs for a second season in a row.

We talked to several of the half-dozen or more D-I prospects on coach Maurice Douglass’ roster during a visit to Clark County last week, and you can look for more interviews in the near future.

SPRINGFIELD FOOTBALL: 5 things to know about the Wildcats

Leonard Taylor released a top 10 that includes Ohio State, Michigan, Cincinnati, Oklahoma, Alabama and Tennessee while linebacker Cameron Hoelscher said he has a group of favorites but wants to wait a little longer to see if anyone else offers.
