Mason swimmers reel in All-American honors

Mason High School swimming coach Mark Sullivan continues to be blown away by the accomplishments of his team.

Mason, which finished as state runner-up for the second consecutive season, defeated the eventual state champ in a head-to-head meet, claimed the district title and 10th straight Greater Miami Conference crown.

Now, the honors continue.

The Comets earned All-American honors in seven events with five swimmers awarded.

“This All-American recognition continues to amaze me due to the fast time standards our swimmers have to have,” Sullivan said. “And it shows their outstanding dedication and hard work to our program.”

In order to receive All-American honors, athletes must have a time in the top 100 in the nation.

“It is a pretty impressive achievement for a program and obviously a swimmer,” Sullivan said.

Stanford-bound Ashley Volpenhein and junior Allison Bloebaum led the way for the Comets, each earning All-American honors in four events each.

Volpenhein, who competed in the Olympic Trials in 2016, was 37th in the nation in the 50 free, 12th in the 100 free and earned All-American honors as part of the 200 medley relay, which finished 20th, and the 400 free relay (11th).

Bloebaum was 23rd in the 200 and 500 free and also earned honores in the 200 and 400 free relays.

Volpenhein closed her career at Mason as a seven-time state champion and a 16-time All-American in addition to placing at the World Junior Championships and competing in the Olympic Trials.

Bloebaum has one more year at Mason and is a three-time state champ and a seven-time All-American.

Sophomore Harna Minezawa earned her first All-American honor, finishing with the 70th-best time in the nation in the 50 free.

Volpenhein. Bloebaum, Minezawa and Leanna Wall combined to turn in the 11th-fastest time in the 400 free relay to earn All-American honors.

Volpenhein, Minezawa, Lauren Thomas and Caroline Wolf teamed up to earn All-American honors in the 200 medley relay with the 20th-fastest time in the nation.

Minezawa, Wall, Thomas and Bloebaum were 23rd in the nation in the 200 free relay to earn All-American honors.
