College Insider: Madison’s Brinegar standout on UNOH diamond

Freshman Joey Brinegar is making a strong impression with the University of Northwestern Ohio softball team.

The Madison High School graduate is hitting .500 and leading the Racers in hits (14), home runs (two) and RBIs (12). The catcher/first baseman has started every game, collecting a double and six runs.

Senior pitcher Chelsea Miller (Franklin) is also contributing for Northwestern Ohio (5-3). She’s 1-1 with a 6.35 earned run average and has seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings.

The Racers will travel to Pikeville (Ky.) for a 3 p.m. doubleheader Friday.

Men's basketball: Christian Brothers sophomore forward Adam Dieball (Lakota East) has been named to the Gulf South Conference first team.

Dieball tops the Buccaneers in scoring (17.4), assists (5.4) and blocks (1.1) while averaging 5.7 rebounds per game. He’s shooting 46.6 percent from the floor, 37.9 percent from 3-point range and 64 percent from the foul line.

Redshirt freshman guard/forward Mitch Mays (Lakota East) has made 15 starts for CBU and is averaging 6 points, 2.4 boards and 1.1 assists per contest. He’s shooting 48.2 percent from the field, 34.4 percent from beyond the arc and 61.3 percent from the charity stripe.

The Buccaneers are 18-12 and have advanced to the NCAA Division II South Regional in Huntsville, Ala. Sixth-seeded CBU will meet No. 3 Delta State (Miss.) on Saturday at noon.

Women's basketball: Junior guard Ana Richter (Talawanda) is among the top players for Southeastern (Fla.), which is 26-0 and headed to the NAIA Division II Championships for the third straight year.

Richter, who earned a spot on the Sun Conference second team, is averaging 11.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and a team-leading 2.7 steals per game. She’s shooting 51.4 percent from the floor and 31 percent from 3-point range.

The Fire are seeded second and will play No. 7 Valley City State on Thursday morning at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Southeastern is the only unbeaten squad in the tournament.
