‘World’s Greatest Leader’ list includes Kasich, LeBron

The annual list from Fortune magazine is an eclectic mix of leaders from sports, arts, government and business.

Who’s a better leader, John Kasich or LeBron James?

According to Fortune magazine, the Cleveland Cavaliers star edges out the Ohio governor, but Kasich did well nonetheless, finishing 12th in the publication’s fourth annual ranking of the “World’s Greatest Leaders.”

The list is purposely eclectic and includes the likes of comedian Samantha Bee and Colombian singer Shakira. Neither President Donald Trump or former President Barack Obama are on the list.

Kasich, now in his seventh year as Ohio’s governor, comes in just behind James but well ahead of Chance the Rapper, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen. Senator John McCain finished ahead of James.

Fortune describes Kasich as a “Trump skeptic” who has used his platform as Ohio governor to rally GOP governors in a push to keep expanded Medicaid.

James made the list because of his commitment to give back to his hometown, Akron, through scholarships for 1,100 underprivileged kids and because he has used his star platform to speak out on issues. Oh, and he ended Cleveland’s 50-year championship drought.

Topping the list is Chicago Cubs Baseball Operations President Theo Epstein, followed by Alibaba Group Chairman Jack Ma and then Pope Francis.

Fortune said those three men lead effectively in today’s environment and teach the lessons of acknowledging reality and offering hope, bringing followers together and building bridges.

The list was assembled by Fortune staff as well as a panel of experts from business, think tanks, universities and foundations.
