Whiskey in a can coming to Ohio

A new product that promises to “take whiskey where glass can’t go” was unveiled nationwide last week and is coming soon to Ohio liquor-store shelves.

Stillhouse Spirits Co., based in Louisville, says its six new products come in a "first-of-its-kind" package: a stainless steel can.

The cans hold as much (750 milliliters) as a standard-sized bottle of liquor, but the unbreakable packaging will “extend celebrations beyond typical bar settings into outdoor environments,” according to a Stillhouse Spirits release. “From a backyard barbecue, a beach bonfire or a tailgate party, Stillhouse travels where glass can’t go.”

The 100 percent clear corn whiskey comes in “Original” (80 proof) and five infused flavors: Apple Crisp, Peach Tea, Coconut, Mint Chip, and Red Hot, which are slightly less potent at 69 proof.

In Ohio, three of those products — Stillhouse Original, Apple Crisp and Peach Tea —have been approved and are now listed for sale but “have not yet been delivered to us for distribution to liquor agencies,” Matt Mullins, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Liquor Control.

Stillhouse Original is “made from estate-grown corn, distilled in authentic copper whiskey stills, then charcoal-filtered for superior quality and taste,” according to a release. Clear whiskey and flavored “moonshine” products have been growing in popularity in Ohio and nationwide.

“Everyone today is looking for special experiences and ideas that defy their expectation,” Stillhouse founder and CEO Brad Beckerman said in the release. “That’s why we created Stillhouse, which challenges traditional barriers and goes where spirits haven’t gone before. This is a crafted whiskey in an innovative package and we will continue to be disruptive in everything we do.”
