3 ways to get FREE tax help

Some community organizations are providing free help during tax season. Here are a few:

ONLINE

Families with household income under $64,000 can file state and federal taxes for free online at myfreetaxes.com. Sponsored by United Way, MyFreeTaxes uses H&R Block software. Specially trained United Way 211 operators are available by phone, chat or email to answer questions. Just dial 211.

IN BUTLER COUNTY

Families and individuals earning $54,000 or less can take advantage of local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites supported by United Way of Greater Cincinnati. All locations use electronic filing.

Butler Country sites include:

  • OhioMeansJobs, 4631 Dixie Highway, Fairfield. Assistance available through April 15 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. Closed March 8, 11, 22 and 25.
  • Booker T. Washington Community Center, 1140 S. Front St., Hamilton, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays through April 15.
  • Robert "Sonny" Hill Community Center, 800 Lafayette Ave., Middletown, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 18, March 18 and April 8.

FOR MILITARY VETERANS

Military veterans and spouses, who fall within certain income guidelines, can use a free tax filing service in Hamilton.

Couples filing jointly must have an adjusted gross income of $95,000 or less for the 2016 tax year. Everyone else must have an adjusted gross income of $65,000 or less.

The free tax filing service is available until April 18 at Military Veterans Resource Center’s Hamilton office, located at 633 High St., Suite 101.
