Water-main replacement closes lanes of Park Avenue in Hamilton

Road work is planned on Park Avenue this week.

Part of an ongoing Hamilton citywide water-main replacement program will close lanes of Park Avenue at North D Street today, March 6, through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Segments of other streets — South Riverview Drive, Hooven Avenue and Clinton Avenue — also will be shut down this week, but not for as long.

Hamilton city crews will be installing a new water main as part of the North D Street Water Main Replacement Project.

The project will replace approximately 550 feet of cast-iron water mains with new ductile iron water mains. About nine residential water-service lines will also be replaced during the project, which should be finished in April.

Work will be conducted if weather allows. “No Parking” signs and detours will be posted. Traffic control will be in place during the restricted times.

Here’s the benefit of the replacement, according to Dwight Culbertson, Hamilton’s director of underground utilities: “The cast-iron water mains were installed decades ago, and have a good service life, but a lot of our older cast-iron mains are just nearing the end of their service life.”

Through manufacturing advances with ductile iron mains, “they have a much longer service life, and they’re able to withstand varying conditions better than cast iron,” he said. “It’s just a systematic upgrade of our system, just to make sure we’ve got adequate facilities to distribute water and meet fire-flow demands, and future water demands.”

Usually, “When we go back, we up-size” the mains, Culbertson said, “so you get more capacity.”

Older cast-iron lines, as they age, become more susceptible to breaks, he said, adding the pipes being installed may last a century.

The city tries to replace 2-3 miles of mains per year, and has about 300 miles of them.

Here are the other streets that will be closed this week, and when (depending on the weather):

  • South Riverview Drive between River Road and Hilda Avenue — Monday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.;
  • Hooven Avenue between River Road and Freeman Avenue — Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and
  • Clinton Avenue between River Road and Freeman Avenue — Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Riverview, Hooven and Clinton street closures will allow connection of the 2016 River Road Water Main Replacement Project to the City Water Distribution System. The River Road Water Main Replacement Project includes replacement of about 5,575 feet of cast iron water main with new ductile iron water main. Approximately 59 residential water service lines and 11 fire hydrants are being replaced during that project.
