Walkers turn out for first Walk4Hunger in Middletown

About 60 people spent Saturday morning raising money and and hunger awareness in the inaugural Walk4Hunger in Middletown.

The event, held among the flowering beds and historical grave sites of Woodside Cemetery & Arboretum, was hosted by Family Service of Middletown, an agency that provides emergency services to the community.

Proceeds will be used to purchase food for the growing number of clients it serves, said Executive Director Maurice Maxwell.

It’s imperative the Middletown community, not just agencies that support Family Service, understands the need for services for the less fortunate, Maxwell said.

“We do have a dilemma,” he said. “It’s important that we get that message out there.”

The agency had 710 in-takes in March 2017, meaning 1,673 local residents received assistance.. During the same month last year, the agency saw 668 in-takes and served 1,417 residents, he said.

Of those served 20 percent are 18 years old and younger; 59 percent are between 18 and 55 years old, the remaining are the elderly, Maxwell said.

“We do cover a spectrum of people who find themselves in poverty and in need of the food and security services we provide,” Maxwell said.

The February unemployment rate in Butler County was 4.8 percent and 6.2 percent in Middletown, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Maxwell said the agency plans to make the walk an annual spring event.
