Vandal’s rock shatters large window at Hamilton’s Welcome Center

A vandal recently broke a large window at Hamilton’s Welcome Center, 1 High St., by throwing a rock through the pane on the east side of the building.

Karen Wittmer, the city’s coordinator of volunteers for events and activities, said someone threw “a huge rock” through the window.

“I think it stinks,” she said.

According to the police report, the damage was discovered around 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30.

“The window was broken out … and it does not appear entry was made into the building,” according to the police report.

“I think it was just a random act of violence,” Wittmer said.

The window will be replaced by L.E. Scofield Window & Door Co. of Hamilton. An estimate of the replacement cost was not immediately available.

About a month ago, another window in Wittmer’s office — a small one — also was broken, she said.

The Welcome Center sells Hamilton merchandise, with volunteers working there every weekday. Wittmer also coordinates volunteers for such programs as City of Sculpture and Operation Pumpkin out of the center.

More than 230 volunteers helped with Operation Pumpkin alone, Wittmer said.

The center is located next to the Soldiers, Sailors and Pioneers monument, which is on the eastern bank of the Great Miami River.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Hamilton Police at 513-868-5811.
