Grand juries, which meet in secret, review criminal charges brought by police and prosecutors and investigate possible criminal behavior. The proceedings are usually one-sided, because the accused is not present and witnesses are not cross-examined.

A grand jury may issue an indictment if it finds probable cause that a crime was committed and the accused person is responsible. An indictment is an accusation that must then be proven in court. The grand jury may also elect to issue no indictment.

Indictments returned during a recent session of the Butler County grand jury:

Deshawn Dajuan Rippey, 518 S. Front St., Hamilton; indicted on two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide.

Austin B. Alexander, 2104 Lowell St., Middletown; indicted on one count each of carrying concealed weapons, trafficking in marijuana, illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana.

James M. Kearns, 1610 Pleasant Ave., Hamilton; indicted on one count each of aggravated possession of drugs, and driving under suspension.

Aaron Willis Mace, 30 Reaghs Way, Oxford; indicted on two counts of trafficking in heroin (direct) and possession of heroin (direct), and one count each of aggravated trafficking in drugs (direct), and aggravated possession of drugs (direct).

Thomas E. Smith Jr., 1254 Parkamo Ave., Hamilton; indicted on one count each of aggravated possession of drugs, aggravated possession of drugs (drugs), possession of heroin (direct), and possession of marijuana.

Tee Shondale Brunner II, 187 Woodstock Drive, Fairfield; certified back to the lower court on one count each of illegal use or possession of marijuana drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana.

Bryan R. Sapp, 25 Hurm St., Apt. 6, Hamilton; indicted on five counts of aggravated trafficking in drugs (direct), and one count each of aggravated possession of drugs (direct), possession of cocaine, aggravated possession of drugs, and illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

David A. Landry, 1440 Biscayne Drive, Hamilton; indicted on one count each of aggravated arson, domestic violence, and menacing.
