8 percent of us believe the groundhog

Not that we normally pay attention to the comings and goings of small mammals, but remember: Tomorrow is Groundhog Day. To keep things a bit jolly, for a change, here are some factoids sent our way from Mauricio Guitron, a marketing professional with National Today, which surveyed more than 1,000 people about the day. He writes:

— Did you know 3 percent of Americans have used Groundhog Day as an excuse to not go to work.

— Half of Americans don’t actually know when Groundhog Day is (tomorrow, as we said).

— Nearly 90 percent of Americans understand what the day is about. Those who don’t get it: 11 percent.

Other findings:

1: I think Groundhog Day is a pointless holiday (30 percent).

2: I have never seen a real groundhog (24 percent).

3: I celebrate Groundhog Day by watching the movie “Groundhog Day” (13 percent).

4: The real meaning of Groundhog Day is Punxsutawney Phil (12 percent).

5: I believe the groundhog is always right about the weather (8 percent).
