Middletown police chief writes strong message after Florida school shootings

Middletown Police Chief Rodney Muterspaw said politicians need to put their differences aside and take immediate action to better protect residents and reduce the chance of more killings.

“I’m so tired of ‘thoughts and prayers,’” he said. “Action needs to be taken right now.”

Here’s what area schools have done to boost security measures

On Thursday, one day after 17 students were killed and 14 were hospitalized when a former student opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., Middletown police officials reviewed their school safety plans, Muterspaw said. He said the plans are current and “where they need to be.”

He said the department also reviewed its safety measures after 26 people were killed Nov. 5, 2017 in a mass shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

Each school should have armed personnel at every entrance to deter a possible school shooter from entering the building, he said. He addressed the issue on the police department’s Facebook page Wednesday night.

He encouraged politicians to better secure public buildings, then debate gun control.

Muterspaw called the Florida shooting “sickening and out of control.”

He also noted that seven police officers recently lost their lives.

“No one values human life,” he said.
