Middletown apartment heavily damaged by fire

Fire heavily damaged a Middletown apartment Sunday afternoon, but residents escaped unharmed.

Firefighters were called to River Pointe apartments off Main Street at about 3 p.m. on a report of a fire. They found flames and smoke shooting from the roof on 697 Ethel Court.

The fire was knocked down in about 15 minutes and firefighters resuscitated the family dog that was carried from the building, according to the fire report.

The fire started in the bedroom closet, according to the report, but the cause remains under investigation by the Middletown Arson Task Force.

Resident Hylenne Escalara said she was asleep on the couch when her child woke her about the fire, according to the report. The woman went into the bedroom, saw fire on the floor and evacuated with her children.

Crews remained on the scene for several hours Sunday. Middletown fire was assisted by Monroe, Trenton and Madison Twp. fire departments.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.
