Madison H.S. shooting: Fear evident in radio traffic

The fear was evident in the voices of students and staff members who called 911 during Monday’s school shooting at Madison High School.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office released radio traffic Wednesday from the shooting to the news media.

In the recording, a female student called 911 and told the dispatcher she was in the woods with a group of people.

The dispatcher asked the girl for her phone number.

“I don’t even know,” she answered with an apology. “I know my mom’s; that’s all.”

“Are they coming? Are they here?” the girl said in a shaky voice.

The dispatcher assured her that help was on the way.

The radio traffic also contained School Resource Officer Kent Hall’s heart-stopping “shots fired at Madison school” call to sheriff’s office dispatchers at 11:18 a.m.

“Send me squad and fire,” Hall told dispatchers. “Suspect dressed in black heading east through a field.”

Hall requested the department’s helicopter to the area and told dispatchers, “Not sure on the victims, several of them down in the cafeteria, staff was attending to them.”

Radio traffic from EMS and fire units show a fast response — the emergency squad building is a quarter of a mile from the school.

Medical helicopters were called and told to land at the community park on West Alexandria, but they were rerouted to the school when it was learned the suspect may be in the location of the park.

Medical personnel indicated one patient had a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
