We never think it will happen to us, but it can. We have all seen the cars abandoned along the roadside after a winter storm. It could be you or a family member one day. Would you be prepared if you were left stranded in a cold car along the interstate?
WHIO-TV Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini has prepared a list of items to gather for a winter weather emergency kit for your car so you can survive the cold.
- Jumper cables
- Retractable shovel
- Windshield wiper fluid
- Ice grips for shoes
- Extra clothes
- Non-perishable food items
- Bottled water
- First aid kit
This week is proof that Ohio can experience bitter cold temperatures. Extra layers of clothing and blankets can keep you warm enough if you are left stranded waiting for help or for a storm to pass. Non-perishable food and water can help regulate your body's normal functions so it can focus on fighting the cold. A retractable shovel and grips for your shoes can be used if you get stuck in the snow. For the slushy and salty roads, make sure you have extra windshield wiper fluid. In case of a dead battery, keep jumper cables or a battery booster in your car.
Any time of year it is also helpful to have a first aid kit in the car.
