“I wanted to do a community block party to maybe bring the community together as one, for unity, love, and especially do something for the kids, because there’s not a lot in our (Second Ward) neighborhood for kids to do,” she said. “So we have to try to bring some things in, positive, for them to do, and let them see that our community loves them, and show them some love, and support.”
Hot dogs, chips, snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy will be provided free to the kids. There will be a bouncy house, with care packages containing personal hygiene items, like toothbrushes and toothpaste, mouthwash and hand sanitizer for children as they prepare to return to school.
“I’m glad to see any event come to the community that will benefit the youth,” said Bob Harris, president of the South East Civic Association, which represents people of the Second and Fourth wards. He noted other people used to host similar block parties in the past along Front Street, “so she’s just picking up where the other young lady left off.”
Residents, organizations and businesses are making contributions, and vendor tables are being rented at the event for $25, said McMillan, 42, who lives on Hamilton’s West Side, but calls the Second Ward her community. Others helping put on the event are Tif Johnson, Carmen Dilligham, OBJ Properties, BWA, and Linda Frierson.
“I don’t have any kids, but I love kids,” she said.
The neighborhood used to have community block parties, but those fell away, “so I’m just trying to bring something positive back,” McMillan said.
