Women’s roller derby hits Hamilton today as the Cincinnati Rollergirls make an appearance at Alive After 5.

Downtown Hamilton’s popular Alive After 5 event — where downtown businesses stay open extra late — will host its second installment on the year today, June 1.

Each month’s Alive After 5 features a theme and June’s theme is All-Star Summer and will feature sports of all sorts.

The Almond Sisters Bakery is hosting the roller derby team, according to Brandi Cardner, one of the bakery’s co-owners.

“We wanted to do something different this month, and I thought it would be awesome to highlight roller derby as a sport,” she said.

The Rollergirls is Cincinnati’s first amateur women’s flat track roller derby team. The all-volunteer team is owned and operated by its skaters, who are women from around the region.

Two Hamiltonians — Amy “Noah Pologies” Michael and Miranda “Redrum” Staudt — are among the Cincinnati Rollergirls who will be at the bakery from 5 to 7 p.m. today.

The rollergirls’ participation in Alive After 5 is fitting, said Michael, who is a teacher at Hamilton High School.

“When I tell people I play roller derby, they revert back to the outdated idea of a staged show rather than the sport that it is now,” Michael said. “The same thing happens when I tell people I live and teach in Hamilton. I find myself in the same position, combating their dated ideas, explaining all that the city has to offer now and how much I believe in my school district. I truly love the spirit and culture of both Hamilton and derby.”
