Annual adult spelling bee aims to raise money for literacy

The Altrusa Club of Hamilton will hold its seventh annual spelling bee from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Butler County Educational Service Center, 400 N. Erie Blvd., in Hamilton.

Over the years, the fundraiser has been dubbed the “Literary Buzz,” and this year’s will be coined “Literacy Awakens,” with proceeds from the event helping fund grants for literacy-based programs in the Butler County area.

Since 2009, Altrusa of Hamilton has been able to provide more than $16,000 in funding for local literacy based grants.

The organization wants to encourage, “fellowship, volunteerism and patriotism,” to make the city a better place to live according to Sue Katz, the spelling bee’s co-chair.

“We have several levels of sponsorship available that will help to fund more grant money for literacy-based programs in our area, in and outside of the traditional classroom,” Katz said. “We will also gladly accept door prizes and gift cards or certificates for services for our bee winners and attendee door prizes.”

Last year’s fundraising efforts from the spelling bee led to Hamilton Living Water Ministry Inc. and the YWCA Hamilton receiving money.

The Living Ministry was recognized for providing academic, literacy and emotional support to the growing Latino population in Butler County.

The YWCA was selected for helping improve the academic, social and literacy areas in the lives of girls in grades three through six.

There will be seven teams made up of three or more people competing Friday in an attempt to claim the Bee Trophy and Best Team Costume award.

Assistants in bee costumes will roam the room like at last year’s event, helping participants and teams prepare for their turn spelling words like glockenspiel, guillotine, iridescent and itinerant. The “bees” also will pop balloons when there is a spelling blunder.
