How one local school district will teach Spanish to its elementary students

The Lebanon City School District announced that it will be implementing a 1st-grade Spanish immersion program beginning with the 2018-2019 school year.

The district hopes to implement two sections of the immersion classrooms educating approximately 60 students. A 50/50 immersion model will be used, which means that students will receive 50 percent of their content instruction in English and 50 percent in Spanish.

Immersion teaches students a second language by delivering academic content in the second language, the district said.

In these classrooms, math and science will be taught in Spanish. Language arts and social studies will be taught in English. Informational meetings were held for parents of current kindergarten students to introduce the program and answer questions.
