Franklin Police respond to second standoff in 1 week

The arrest Monday of a man who held his wife, adult son and step-daughter at gun point inside their house marked the second standoff in Franklin in less than a week.

Jason Cole, 44, was arrested and charged with kidnapping and domestic violence after Franklin Police said they negotiated for three hours Monday with Cole.

Police were called at about 5 a.m. to a home in the 100 block of Minnick Street.

According to a 911 call, Cole and his wife were fighting at 3:30 a.m., just an hour and a half before officers responded to the standoff.

A neighbor told the Journal-News she heard people fighting Sunday night and thought about calling police.

“I was outside smoking a cigarette, I heard the yelling, they were throwing things, looked like someone was getting ready to move out,” said neighbor Tammy Christy.

Christy said she was worried about her safety after officers told her and her daughter to stay inside her home during the standoff.

“My daughter came out to go to work, and the police officer told her she needed to come back inside the house. He said there was a situation across the street and she needed to stay inside until they concluded whatever needed to be done,” Christy said.

“We did receive information he (Cole) was armed with a glock hand gun,” said Franklin Police Chief Russell Whitman.”That’s why officers took extra precaution and contacted the tactical response team for everyone’s safety.”

The Warren County Tactical Response Team responded to the stand off and established communications with Cole.

Whitman said Cole’s adult son and 6-year-old stepdaughter were able to escape the house through a bedroom window incident. Cole’s wife was released shortly after the Warren County Tactical Response Team made contact with Cole. She was taken to Atrium Medical Center in Middletown for injuries from an assault, police said.

After nearly three hours of negotiations, Cole walked out of the house at about 7:50 a.m. without incident, Whitman said.

Seven guns were removed from the home, he said.

On Dec. 26, police arrested Daryl S. Napier, 39, after he barricaded himself inside a second-story crawlspace inside his ex-wife’s house in the 100 block of North Main Street.

Judge Rupert E. Ruppert set Napier’s bond at $50,000 on each of the charges that included two counts of burglary, breaking and entering, possession of drug abuse instruments, felony obstructing official business, and felony possession of drugs.

A preliminary hearing for Napier has been set for Jan. 3. Cole is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 3.
